We went to Olympia, Washington to perform at the Experimental Music Festival on Friday night. The video above is an excerpt from our performance.
I had to pack a smaller gear setup for this show, but this is how it went: Hacked SK-1 into my Omnivox Box, Omnivox Box into the Kaos Pad, Kaos Pad out to the mixer. I also had my hacked Yamaha PCS, which I was switching out for the SK-1.
Here’s a rundown of how the trip went:
Thursday
Woke up at 5am, Brendan dropped me off at Christopher’s house, and we unsuccessfully tried to cram all of our gear into the back of Channin’s Prius. We ended up going over to the Oakland airport to rent an SUV. Finally headed out at 9:30am, after enjoying some fresh watermelon. The drive was long, but between four people no one was too fatigued at the wheel. The drive was mostly uneventful. We rolled into Portland around 9pm, and checked into the Crystal Hotel just as the sun was going down.
Portland is a really nice city, and it has a small town vibe with its really narrow streets.
Friday
Kicked around Portland for a bit, and had breakfast at a cool diner. I had a bagel sandwich with a steaming hot scrambled egg in it. When I bit into the sandwich, the hot egg squirted out through the middle hole and burned my chin. Now that is bad user experience design.
We drove to Olympia, just a few hours north and poked around the city for a bit. It’s a nice small city, and the rent is really cheap! Think 350-500 for a single bedroom. I kind of want to move there if I can make an internet business.
At 6:30 we began loading our gear into the venue, The Northern.
The show went really well, and the four other bands had some awesome sets. There were tons of electronics and pedals everywhere. The second band, Echoes of Infiniti was an extremely loud metal drone duo.
To read more about the other bands, check out SSG Music’s review of the event.
After the show we struggled to find a place to eat, but eventually discovered a Denny’s where we ate pancake puppies and discussed the possibility of Eurostache soundtracking a porn.
Saturday
We drove an hour to go to Seattle and check it out. We looked around Pike’s Place, an outdoor market, and chilled out at a few different parks. We went to the rock and roll / sci-fi museum, which was an interesting way to spend some time. We tried to seek out the sound garden later that night, but it was all fenced off.

Thom, adhering his gum to the gum wall in Seattle. Don't worry, his tongue was completely insulated!
Sunday
This was a long drive home. We listened to a bunch of albums, and discovered that our rental vehicle would start whistling if we drove over 85 miles per hour.

Overall it was an awesome trip. Here are a few more pictures of washroom art that inspired me.
